Nouns are made plural by adding
(множественные существительные образуются путём прибавления):
-s
the most nouns (к большинству существительных) | dogs, boys, months |
but: | a man - men; (an Englishman - Englishmen) ! a German - Germans a woman - women; a child - children; a mouse- mice; a louse - lice; an ox - oxen; a foot - feet; a tooth - teeth; a goose – geese; a fish - fish = fishes (подразумеваются разные сорта) a fruit - fruit = fruits (подразумеваются разные сорта) a sheep - sheep; a deer - deer; a swine - swine; a moose - moose; a salmon – salmon; a trout – trout; a means - means; a series - series; a spacecraft – spacecraft; a species – species. |
to nouns adding in vowels + o (к существительным, оканчивающимся на гласную + о) | radios, videos |

1. После глухой согласной:
cup - cups [s]
book- books [s]
2. После шипящих:
box - boxes [iz]
match - matches [iz]
3. После звонкой согласной и гласной:
garden - gardens [z]
girl - girls [z]

to other nouns ending in –o (к остальным существительным, оканчивающимся на о) | tomatoes, potatoes |
to nouns ending in -s, -ss, -x, -ch, -sh, -sch, -z (к существительным, оканчивающимся на -s, -ss, -x, -ch, -sh, -sch, -z) | buses, glasses, foxes, churches, bushes |
-ies
to nouns ending in consonant + y (y – i + es) (к существительным, оканчивающимся на согласный +y) | cities, flies |
-ves
to some nouns ending in –f/-fe (f/fe – v + es) (к некоторым существительным, оканчивающимся на f/fe) | leaves, wives |
but: | roofs, cliffs, beliefs, proofs, chiefs, handkerchiefs, safes |

Compound nouns form their plurals by adding –s/-es
- to the second noun if the compound consists of two nouns (ко второму существительному, если оно сложное и состоит из 2 существительных)
shopkeeper - shopkeepers
- to the noun if the compound consists of an adjective and a noun (к существительному, если оно сложное и состоит из прилагательного и существительного)
frying pan - frying pans
- to the first noun if the compound consists of two nouns connected with a preposition (к первому существительному, если оно сложное и состоит из двух существительных, соединённых предлогом)
brother-in-law - brothers-in-law
- at the end of a compound if this is not made up of any nouns
grown-up – grown-ups
Неисчисляемые существительные не имеют формы множественного числа.
